Emilia in numbers
In addition to the 3 capital cities, the area called "Emilia" involves more than 119 municipalities (between Municipalities, Unions of Municipalities and Provinces) for over 1,000,000 inhabitants.
Just considering it as pure numerical data, the figure suggests the population of a metropolis.
But what good-sized cities could boast a total of:
142 museums of which, in addition to the 8 Food Museums, 57 in Parma, 51 in Piacenza and 26 in Reggio Emilia;
51 theaters both historians and contemporaries, 15 of which are in Parma, 12 are in Piacenza and as many as 23 are in Reggio Emilia;
1 National Park reserve Mab Unesco, the 11 Parks of the Duchy - of whom: 5 regional parks, 1 provincial park, 5 reserves -and 8 among naturalistic areas, oases and reserves in the province of Reggio Emilia;
161 km of the Po river our of the total 652 km of its course, 96 of which are in Piacenza, 47 are in Parma and 18 are in Reggio Emilia;
Over 15 traditional typical products recognized with PDO, PGI or other important certifications.
As for the dairies, 167 in Parma and 99 in Reggio Emilia for the "Parmigiano Reggiano" and 20 in Piacenza for the "Grana Padano";
In the salami factory section, 132 companies are dedicated to Parma Ham, 13 are specialized in the production of PDO "Salumi from Piacenza" and 14 in Salame Felino, 23 for the "Culatello di Zibello" and 14 are included in the "Consorzio del Culatello" and the "Ancients Producer of Culatello and Spalla Cruda";
26 companies belong to the Consortium for "Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Reggio Emilia";
147 wineries producing PDO wines, of which 22 in Parma, 90 in Piacenza and 35 in Reggio Emilia;
7 starred restaurants, 3 of which in Parma, 2 in Reggio Emilia and 2 in Piacenza;
50 castles scattered between the Apennines, the hills and the lowland;
4 spas between Parma and Reggio Emilia;
Over 13 villages of historical and artistic interest, certified by awards such as the "Orange Flag" and those of "Authentic Villages", "Borgo dei borghi 2018" and "the most beautiful villages in Italy".
Several UNESCO awards, including the UNESCO Creative City of Parma for Gastronomy. The UNESCO Signaling of the Baptistery of Parma, among the sites of greatest astronomical value worldwide, the title of the UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve obtained from the Apennine National Park Tosco Emiliano and a stretch of Po river. Parma in 2020 is the Italian Capital of Culture.
